About Warsaw Airport

One of the biggest airports in Poland, Warsaw (WAW) Frederic Chopin Airport is an international airport situated in a district of Warsaw, Wlochy. Handling almost 50 % of country’s traffic air, it is the busiest airport in this region. First named Okecie International Airport, nowadays its name, Warsaw (WAW) Frederic Chopin Airport, reminds us of composer and inhabitant in Warsaw, Frederic Chopin. But its first name, is still used when we talked about air traffic and aerodrome references. During a day, there are scheduled over 300 flights and these flights connect Poland with the whole Europe. In 2010, the number of passengers increased quickly and reached over 8, 7 million.

During its history, Warsaw (WAW) Frederic Chopin Airport needed some transformations for being the famous airport known today. At the beginning, Okecie International Airport was an aerodrome and because it affected the air traffic, the Minister of Railways gave the order for building an airport on the place of aerodrome. This airport (The Central Airport-Okecie) was designed to include all the flights from Pole Mokotowskie. Then, because of World War II, the airport was transformed into a battleground between Germany and Polish army. Almost destroyed, the airport will see a prosperous period in the 20th century thanks to its terminals and to its facilities. Its actual name comes from the famous pianist Frederic Chopin, but since March 2001 it is rarely used in practice.
